What is a Giclee?
Giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution,
high-fidelity print produced with a special large format ink-jet
printer (in my case an Epson
Stylus Pro 9800). I shoot with digital cameras and lenses
designed specifically for digital cameras. Since my photographic
images are producing only digital files, there are no "original"
film negatives that can be used to print directly onto "reactive"
photographic paper. This is not a problem, though, and is
actually an advantage to gain superior results on quality
prints that look better than a traditional photo enlargement.
The giclees that I am having printed are printed on German
Hahnemühle
FineArt paper by Custom Photo Labs
in Duluth, MN. They are truly superior images in several ways.
The colors are brighter, last longer, and are produced at
such high-resolution that they have virtually continuous tone.
The range of color for giclees is far beyond that of traditional
photographic paper prints, details are crisper, and the varying
textures of different subject matters are clearly visible.
Giclees use inkjet technology, but are far more sophisticated
than your traditional desktop printer. The process employs
six colors—light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta,
yellow and black of lightfast. The process also uses specially-pigmented
inks and finer, more numerous, and replaceable printheads
resulting in a wider color gamut, and the ability to print
on various media. The ink is sprayed onto the media, actually
mixing the color on the media to create true color shades
and hues. The prints that I am selling are produced on custom
fine art paper for better color saturation and texture compared
to traditional photographic paper.
If you see one of these giclee prints (above) in person,
you will see the difference when they are produced directly
to print from original RAW digital files.
Note that when you click on the images above and view them
in their "large" 900-pixel-wide format, you are
only seeing them at about 1/50th of their original resolution
on your monitor. You need to see them printed at full resolution
to truly appreciate their beauty. |
